The Basics of Replacing a Toilet Part- 2
The first step is to disconnect the water supply. First, turn off the water at the fixture shutoff valve or main shutoff valve. Flush the toilet a couple of times to empty the bowl and tank. Sponge out any water that remains. Unfasten the coupling on the flexible tubing at the bottom of the tank. If the flexible tubing is kinked or corroded, replace it with new flexible tubing.
If you have a bowl mounted toilet, unbolt the empty take from the bowl using a screwdriver to hold the mounting bolt inside the tank while unfastening its nut with a wrench from below.
If the tank is wall mounted then use a spud wrench to loosen the couplings on the pipe connecting the tank and bowl. Remove the pipe and unscrew the hanger bolts that attach the tank to the wall. If the replacement toilet is not wall mounted, remove the hanger brackets.
To remove the bowl, take the caps off the hold-down bolts and nuts with an adjustable wrench. If the nuts are rusted on the bolts, soak them with penetrating oil or cut them off. Take precaution to not damage the bathtub or sink when taking out the old toilet.
