Installing a handheld shower

Standard shower heads fixed as 72 inches or so above the floor don’t always get the water where it’s needed and are inconvenient for people who cannot stand when showering. A shower head mounted on a flexible hose allows the user to direct the spray to any part of the body.

If you want to replace a fixed shower with handheld shower you have two options: Replace the existing shower head with a handheld model or replace the tub spout with a special spout containing a diverter.

There are pros and cons to both instillations. Replacing the existing shower head is the simplest way to install a handheld shower. The disadvantage is that it will be out of reach to a person who must sit while showering. All you need to do is uninstalling the existing shower head with a pipe wrench then follow the instructions that come with your new faucet.

Although it is a bit more involved than the first method, replacing the existing tub spout with one containing a special diverter will allow access for someone who needs to site while showering or for showering your kids.

If the existing spout has an allen wrench set screw on the underside, remove it using an allen wrench, and gently pull it off the pipe. If there is no screw, unscrew the spout with an adjustable wrench. Screw on the new spout, and then attach the shower hose.

Lastly, mark the wall where you want to put the bracket that holds the shower head. Drill holes in the wall for the bracket and attach with screws.

It’s really that easy!
