Installing Your Own Patterned Carpet

Patterned carpet DIY installation is more difficult than regular carpet, and you need to be sure to buy extra carpet to ensure you have enough of a pattern to line the seams up neatly and properly. It's a tough job even for professionals, so if you attempt this job you'll need lots of patience, the proper tools, and the correct knowledge to complete the project successfully.

Materials Needed
  • Patterned carpet
  • Utility knife
  • Tack strips
  • Duct tape
  • Power stretcher

#1 - Select Your Carpet
Do some research and check out different manufacturers for the ideal patterned carpet for you. Make sure to check not only for price comparison but also warranty information as well as any manufacturer suggestions for installing, which may come in handy. Be sure the carpet purchase includes the stipulated material allowance that most manufacturers suggest to complete a successful installation.

#2 - Prep the Carpet
You will have to unroll the carpet and then allow it to set for 24 hours before installation. Be sure that you clear the room where the carpet will be installed allowing it to relax so it will be easier to cut and line up when you are ready to begin.

#3 - Carpet Cutting
Use a sharp utility knife to cut the carpet, and please be very careful. Make sure you have the proper room measurement before making any cuts. Start along a seam from the front and carefully make a 12 to15 inch cut at a time to ensure you stay on a straight line. Be careful, take your time, do a neat job.

#4 - Lay Tack Strips
Tack strips are needed to hold the patterned carpet to the floor. Make sure that these are securely placed along the edges of the walls and any existing stairways. Tap these to the floor carefully and make sure that they do not move.

#5 - Padding Down
Lay the padding down but not over the tack strips. Cut the padding so that the edge of the padding matches up to the edge of the tack strips. Be patient and get it right. Connect one or more pieces of padding using duct tape so that it will not move during carpet installation. Be sure to have all of the padding seams covered by tape.

#6 - Then Lay The Carpet
The carpet must be laid down carefully over the padding. You should install it by rolling it over the floor to the cut measurements. Make use of a power stretcher so that the carpet will reach from wall to wall while carefully attaching it to the tack strips. Be patient and pay attention to small details, particularly; make sure when you are attaching and stretching the carpet, that you maintain the pattern integrity.

Remember:

Power stretching the carpet to fit snugly from wall to wall also requires paying special attention to any lines or designs that may go askew with stretching. Always lineup any pattern when stretching and attaching to the tack strips to ensure a straight installation.

After you have completed the installation, carefully walk around the perimeter where the carpet is attached to the tack strips to make sure it is properly secured and does not shift or move.
