Tools Needed For Carpet Installation
When you are going to save money by doing your own carpet installation, it is important to make certain that you have the correct tools and supplies. For most general carpet installation purposes you will need the following tools listed below.
These items that are listed in this first section are Specialty Carpet Installation Tools.
If you do not want to spend the money to buy and own these tools forever, then you can rent them from any home improvement store. It is not very expensive to rent these items.
Knee Kicker: This is a metal tool that is 18 inches in length. It is used to hold the carpet in place with its teeth, while a person drives their knee into the other padded side in order to stretch it over the tack strip. It is designed to use your knee to "kick it" because you will be kneeling on the floor as you install the carpet.
Power Stretcher: This should be used in place of a knee kicker if the room is larger than 10 by 10. You will need much more force to properly stretch the carpet for a larger room.
Seam Tape: This seals up seams tightly so that they will not be noticeable. You will actually purchase this for the job, but you will use it conjunction with the rented seam iron listed next.
Seam Iron: This iron is used to heat up and activate the adhesive on the seam tape listed above. If done properly, this is a very effective step in installing carpeting the proper way.
Tack Cutter: This tool is simply a blade that is strong enough to go through a tack strip and cut diagonally or straight. It is very sharp so please be very careful.
Seam Cutter: This provides a clean cut from the back of the carpet. This is yet another sharp tool, so please handle it with care.
These are just basic household tools that are commonly found inside the home. You may already have these or you will have to buy them, it is doubtful that someone would rent these.
Utility Knife
Hammer
Stapler
Measuring Tape
Please always remember that you really need all of the correct materials and tools for carpet and installation projects! Not only will this make the task easier, but you will be safer if you use the correct items, and the job will come out much better than if you try to use shortcuts. Safety equipment such as glasses, gloves, and knee pads are also highly recommended.
