Fixing Problems With Carpet That Was Incorrectly Installed

When people install a new carpet it can be an expensive adventure, so many folks try to do it themselves. If the job comes out great, well then that is a relief, but sometimes there are mistakes that need to corrected. So what do you do when mistakes were made or you have to fix it? Here are some tips on repairing a carpet installation job gone awry.

Re-stretching

Probably the most common error that occurs when people are installing their own carpet is that they did not stretch the carpet correctly. If this has happened you won't need to go through the huge expense of replacing all of it. With a few rented tools, some time and lots of patience, and definitely some elbow grease, you can actually re-stretch the carpet yourself. You will need a Power Stretcher, which can usually be rented from a local hardware store, a Knee Kicker, and a good quality and sharp utility knife. This job can be as simple as pulling the carpet up, re-stretching with the power stretcher, and re-attaching it to the tack strips.

Frayed Carpet

Another common issue that people have when they have self-installed their own carpet is finding frays in the carpet shortly after installation. While this shouldn't happen for a long time, if you purchased a lower grade carpet it can be see within a few weeks of the installation of the new carpeting. Fixing a fray in the carpet is not a difficult task. A carpet bar will conceal frays around the edges, and using a pair of scissors can easily trim any unsightly frays in the center.

Carpet Seams

Seams are always placed using a special strip that has adhesive attached. If the adhesive is weak or not heated to the correct temperature you will see the seams popping up. This can usually be fixed using a simple glue gun to replace the adhesive. Try this before shelling out big money to have it professionally repaired.
