Carpet Installing Yourself

If you want to be your own carpet installer and you have plenty of time and patience, then installing your own carpet can be very rewarding. You will save lots of money on installation and you can use it for buying better carpet.

Tools Needed:
  • Seam Iron
  • Seam Tape
  • Power Stretcher
  • Goggles
  • Knee Kicker
  • Seam Cutter
  • Chalk Line
  • Tack-less Strips
  • Carpet Knife
  • Stapler
  • Gloves
  • Stair Tool (if carpeting stairs)
Preparation of Room

You will need to make sure that the floor is completely clean before you start. Once it's clean you can install the tack-less strips. These will be placed about a half inch from the wall throughout the whole room.

Padding

Make sure that you install the padding in long strips that do not overlap. Use the stapler to keep the padding in place. Make sure that the tack-less strips are still exposed.

Measuring

Measure the room at its longest point by using a chalk line. Add four inches to the final measurement.

Lay Out the Carpet

Unroll the carpet and use the measurements you've just taken to start cutting. When cutting the carpet, make sure you are using a good carpet knife to avoid snags. If your room needs two pieces of carpet, ensure that the pieces overlap by about 2 inches. Please be very careful with that carpet knife!

Seaming Two Pieces

If you have to seam two pieces together, make sure that you are cutting the carpets at the same time, one on top of the other. This will ensure the carpet lines are perfectly even.

Heat up the steam iron to the correct heat setting. The iron will be different for various brands of carpet, so check with the manufacturer of the carpet for the best setting.

Use the seaming tape underneath the carpet.

With the carpet now placed where you are going to seam it, you will use the seam iron to melt the two pieces together with the adhesive. Make sure to place something with weight on the seam until it has completely dried.

Installing the Carpet

You can now begin to attach the carpet to the tack-less strips. This is where the knee kicker will be used. Position the kicker about three inches from the wall and forcefully drive it with your knees into the padded end of the carpet. Then trim any excess carpet.

Next, using the power stretcher, repeat this process on the other side of the room.

After you install the carpet, make the necessary cuts for vents, add the base molding, and attach the door edge.
